Soundgarden are preparing some of their never before released live recordings from 1996 to make up their new live compilation album titled 'Live On I-5'. The 'I-5' in the title is a reference to the highway that spans the west coast of the US, and the cities where Soundgarden played these last shows. The live album will be released March 22, 2011.
The album comes on the back of the band's reunion last year to play shows after 13 years apart. Featuring many Soundgarden favorites, a couple of covers and the majority being previously unreleased material, die-hard fans are going to want to put this on their shopping list. The band intended to release this album years ago after the tour in '96, but due to their split up the material was left in storage and never put together.
Now that Soundgarden are playing together again fans are wondering about new material, and in a December interview guitarist Kim Thayil hinted as follows... "When we get together to rehearse, it's natural for us, being guys who have a rapport, to start jamming and inventing. We've come up with instrumental, and certainly on occasion, lyrical ideas. I'm not confirming anything, but it's impossible for us to get in a room and not come up with ideas. It's very likely in the future, perhaps sooner than later, we'll get together and de-emphasise the rehearsing part and emphasise the jamming part."
The jury is still out on if Cornell can hit the notes he used to, there have been mixed live reviews of Audioslave and Cornell's solo shows, as well as the Soundgarden shows last year. Some say he can hit everything he used to, while others arguing that he blew his voice way back in '96 just before Soundgarden disbanded.
